Presentation of the Pete Gunn Scholarship and Jim Harrison Award
The first recipient of the James T. Harrison, Jr. award is Pete Gunn III. Pete and I taught together at least two days every year since 1985 until last year. He called me in September and apologized for not being at the Annual Conference but thought he would be at the January Advanced Underwriting class; unfortunately he could not join us. Pete was caring – He cared about people, he cared about truckers, he cared about education. He brought value to MCIEF and we miss his support.
In honor of Pete and all the time he shared his knowledge with his fellow agents, who for the most part were his competitors, his love of trucking and the insurance industry, the MCIEF Board of Directors has established the Pete Gunn Scholarship. This scholarship will be given each year to an individual just starting in the industry to attend the Annual Conference. Each year this will remind us of Pete, his dedication to the trucking and education industry and hopefully develop others to follow his footsteps and his motto: “You must do it right, be honest and take care of the insured”.
During the last year I lost two people that helped make me who I am and without them, MCIEF might not have happened or at least been as successful. Jim called me in 1981 and asked if I could write a program addressing insuring truckers. He was the Education Consultant for CIC in Florida and knew that my father was a trucker. The call started my teaching and the first CIC class was in Chicago in 1983 and later teaching for the AAMGA (now WSIA). This allowed me to meet many great people over 30 years teaching and in January 2013, twelve people came together with me to form MCIEF.
Through the years I have heard similar stories of how Jim inspired others to be better at their insurance craft. Brenda Wiser earned her CIC in 1995. She recalls her first CIC class which featured Jim as a presenter. His incomparable knowledge, ability to explain the subject in simple terms, and unwavering patience in responding to questions, guides her even today in her role as a Transportation Leader for her insurance brokerage. She notes there are a handful of teachers you remember your whole life….Jim is one who will be sorely missed but not forgotten.
The Board of Directors, in honor of Jim, has established an award to recognize a member that has given their time and knowledge educating the insurance industry concerning motor carriers. This will not necessarily be an annual award and the Board will make considerations as appropriate.
Please share this scholarship application with your associates who would like to get involved in the truck insurance field.
The scholarship is valued at $2,000 and includes:
